The relationship between Team Alpha Male and Nova Uniao is fragile and oftentimes hostile. However, that didn’t stop UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw from standing up for fellow titleholder Jose Aldo.

Aldo (25-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) has been drowned by criticism in recent weeks after he withdrew from arguably the biggest fight of the year against Conor McGregor (18-2 MMA, 6-0 UFC) at UFC 189 earlier this month. The featherweight champ suffered a rib injury not long before the fight and was replaced by Chad Mendes, who lost to McGregor by second-round TKO for the interim title.

There are conflicting reports about whether Aldo’s ribs were broken or bruised, but no one has denied damage occurred. Dillashaw (11-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) can relate, because a fractured rib forced him out of an April title defense against Aldo’s teammate Renan Barao (32-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC).

There were some who urged Aldo to battle through the pain and fight McGregor anyway. Dillashaw said that would have been an unwise decision by “Scarface,” because he knows just how debilitating a rib injury can be.
