Diaz clears up some of his comments about McGregor

There were a lot of questions left unanswered after the historic UFC 196 press conference last week when Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz met face-to-face for the first time. Diaz cleared up some of those questions after his open workout Wednesday afternoon at the Jabbawockeez Theater in the MGM Grand.

“(McGregor) didn’t want the fight at 170, it just ended up there,” Diaz said when asked why McGregor wanted to fight him at welterweight. “The fight was played around with, they offered me left and right this fight. I’m a martial artist, no weight class necessary.”

Diaz and McGregor will have to agree to disagree, as McGregor said later in the day that he told Diaz let’s do it at an official weight class.

Despite all the back-and-forth between the two last week, there is a sense of mutual respect.

“(McGregor brings) a lot of talk, lot of exposure and lot of cameras,” Diaz said. “It’s good for the sport and all of our pockets. He’s saying a lot of the stuff I felt the same way about, so at least they listen to somebody.”

One of Diaz’s biggest qualms against McGregor is his insistence that McGregor has only fought “midgets” in the featherweight division. Diaz, of course, has nine years of experience in the UFC and has fought at 155 and 170 pounds against some of the world’s best.

“He’s real confident in his prediction on all this stuff,” Diaz said. “But look at your lineup and look at mine. I been fighting top guys the last nine years. And you’ve been fighting little guys.”

Diaz certainly isn’t a “little guy”, standing at six-feet tall. On Saturday, March 5, we’ll see if McGregor is up for the test.
